Committees may report back to the Board of Directors in a few different ways.
Board Liaison (on Committee). In many cases, a Board Liaison is assigned to the Committee, and may even act as the Committee Chair. This Board member will attend the meetings and interact with the Committee, in accordance with the scope of the Committee Charter. The Board Member will provide an oral or written report of the happenings of the Committee back to the Board at the Board meeting, and present the minutes of the Committee to the Board.
Board Liaison (not on Committee). A Committee Chair will report back to the Board member what is occurring in the Committee, and provide the Board member with a copy of the Committee’s minutes. The Board Liaison will then make a verbal and/or written report to the Board of Directors as to the happenings of the Committee which is presented prior to the Board meeting (if written) or provided at the Board Meeting (oral). If the Committee Chair is NOT attending the Board Meeting, the Board Liaison will provide an oral report to the Board as to the Committee’s happenings, and distribute the Committee Minutes to the Board.
No Board Liaison (Committee Chair). Each Committee will have a Committee Chair. If there is not an assigned Board Liaison, the Committee Chair will make an oral or written report for/at the Board Meeting. The Committee Chair will be charged with submitting the Minutes of the Committee Meeting (taken by the Committee’s Secretary) at the Board Meeting. The Committee Chair will also answer any questions that the Board may have, and take feedback/questions back to the Committee.

Summary: Committees are groups of volunteers who are assigned to a task at hand, as listed in the Committee Charter (Committee’s Purpose). Committees usually serve as recommending bodies to the Board of Directors, who then makes decisions based on Committee recommendations. The Committee Chair is ultimately responsible for reporting back to the Board of Directors the happenings of the Committee since the last Board meeting, and providing a copy of their minutes. The Board Liaison to the Committee may be the Chairperson of the Committee, or it could be another volunteer on the Committee.
